Skills Required for Spider Lift Sales & Application Engineer

A Spider Lift (Spider Cherry Picker) Sales & Application Engineer is a triple role integrating technology, sales, and on-site application. Professionals must master product knowledge, develop solutions, communicate effectively, close deals, and provide on-site support and after-sales service.

The required skill set is as follows:

I. Core Professional & Technical Skills (Foundation)

1. In-depth Product Knowledge

  • Mechanics & Structure: Proficient in principles, structure, and performance parameters of core components including spider lift chassis, telescopic/articulated booms, outriggers, platform, and slew mechanism (e.g., max working height, outreach, load capacity, outrigger span, gradeability).
  • Hydraulics & Electronics: Understand hydraulic systems (pumps, valves, cylinders, pipelines), electric control (PLC, sensors, safety circuits, control panels), and power systems (electric/diesel) with knowledge of common malfunctions.
  • Safety Systems: Familiar with safety standards (e.g., GB 25849, EN 280) and compliance requirements for overload protection, tilt protection, limit switches, emergency stop, anti-fall devices, and outrigger interlocks.
  • Models & Configurations: Able to quickly match models (telescopic, articulated, hybrid boom; electric, diesel, hybrid power; crawler, wheeled) and recommend optional accessories (platform rotation, basket, material bucket, remote control).

2. Application & Solution Design Capabilities

  • Working Condition Adaptation: Understand job requirements and constraints in typical scenarios such as interior renovation, curtain wall installation, municipal landscaping, factory maintenance, confined spaces, and complex terrain (e.g., floor load capacity, space dimensions, noise/emission requirements).
  • Solution Development: Independently complete technical proposals, working condition simulation, load calculation, site survey, risk assessment, and deliver implementable operation plans and safety briefings.
  • Drawings & Tools: Able to read mechanical and electrical drawings; use CAD, BIM, or working condition simulation software for solution visualization and verification.

3. On-site Operation & Troubleshooting

  • Installation & Commissioning: Master the full process of equipment entry, outrigger leveling, function testing, and safety verification.
  • Troubleshooting: Quickly identify issues such as hydraulic leaks, electrical faults, abnormal movements, and sensor failures; capable of basic maintenance and emergency response.
  • Customer Training: Provide on-site training for operators on safety regulations, operating procedures, routine maintenance, and emergency handling.

II. Sales & Business Skills (Value Conversion)

1. Customer Development & Demand Discovery

  • Market Insight: Understand trends, competition, mainstream brands (e.g., JLG, Dingli, Sinoboom), and price ranges in the aerial work platform industry.
  • Needs Analysis: Identify customer pain points (efficiency, safety, cost, compliance) through inquiry and research; translate technical parameters into customer value (e.g., “30m working height + 360° rotation = full curtain wall coverage, reduce scaffolding cost by 50%”).
  • Customer Profiling: Distinguish decision-makers (owners/purchasers), technical managers (engineering/equipment), and end-users (operators) for targeted communication.

2. Business Negotiation & Closing Skill

  • Solution Presentation: Develop and explain technical proposals, PPTs, and cases to clearly communicate product advantages and ROI.
  • Quotation & Bidding: Independently prepare quotations and bidding documents; understand cost structure, pricing strategy, payment terms, warranty, and service commitments.
  • Objection Handling: Address concerns such as high price, tight schedule, and high risk with data, cases, and service solutions.
  • Contract & Payment Collection: Participate in contract negotiation, follow up order execution, delivery, acceptance, and payment collection.

3. Customer Relationship & Long-term Maintenance

  • Account Management: Establish and maintain customer files, conduct regular follow-ups, and explore demands for repeat purchases, rental, spare parts, and services.
  • Reputation Building: Enhance customer trust and referrals through professional service and problem-solving.

III. Comprehensive Soft Skills (Professionalism)

1. Communication & Collaboration

  • Technical Translation: Explain complex technology to non-technical customers in plain language; accurately convey customer needs to R&D, production, and after-sales teams.
  • Cross-departmental Cooperation: Coordinate with sales, production, after-sales, legal, and finance to ensure smooth order and project execution.
  • Presentation Skills: Clear verbal and written expression; deliver professional and persuasive product demonstrations and solution presentations.

  • On-site Adaptability: Respond to site emergencies, equipment failures, and urgent customer needs with quick decision-making and action.
  • Resilience: Adapt to business travel, long project cycles, and performance pressure with a positive attitude.

  • Technical Updating: Continuously learn new products, technologies (e.g., lithium battery, intelligent control, IoT monitoring), and industry standards.

IV. Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education & Major: College degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation, Construction Machinery, Mechatronics, or related fields.
  • Preferred Certifications: Aerial Work Platform Operation Certificate, Electrician Certificate, Mechanical Engineer Certificate, Safety Management-related certificates.
  • Experience: 1–3 years of experience in technical support, sales, after-sales, or application in aerial work platforms / construction machinery; preferred with industry resources in rental, construction, property, or municipal sectors.
