Aminoethyl Ethanolamine Tri(Methylene Phosphonic Acid) (HEDTMP)(AEEA Phosphonate)
Product description
Aminoethyl Ethanolamine Tri(Methylene Phosphonic Acid) (HEDTMP, also known as AEEA Phosphonate) is a multifunctional organophosphonate used primarily as a scale inhibitor, chelating agent, and anodic corrosion inhibitor in industrial water systems. Its high calcium tolerance and thermal stability make it suitable for demanding conditions.
Primary Application Areas
Industrial Cooling Water Systems
HEDTMP is widely used in circulating cooling water to control carbonate and sulfate scales. It works by chelating scale-forming cations (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Ba²⁺, Sr²⁺) and disrupting crystal growth. The amine groups also adsorb onto metal surfaces (e.g., carbon steel) to form a protective film, providing corrosion inhibition . It is typically formulated with other phosphonates, polycarboxylic acids, or their salts rather than used alone .
Oilfield Water Treatment
In oilfield applications, HEDTMP serves as a scale and corrosion inhibitor for production pipelines, completion systems, and processing facilities. It is effective against calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, and iron scales, particularly in high-temperature water systems. It can be applied via squeeze treatment or continuous dosing . A notable advantage is its minimal effect on the rheological properties of drilling muds and its excellent tolerance to high-calcium brines .
Boiler and High-Temperature Systems
HEDTMP is used in boiler water and high-temperature heat exchange systems to inhibit calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and iron oxide deposition. Its h3 chelation of Fe³⁺ helps reduce iron oxide fouling on boiler tubes and heat exchanger bundles .
Other Industrial Uses
Additional applications include reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration pretreatment to delay membrane scaling, as well as use in textile and dyeing processes as a metal ion chelating agent .
Typical Dosage
As a scale inhibitor: 1–20 mg/L
As a corrosion inhibitor: 20–60 mg/L
These are reference ranges for the single component; actual dosage in formulated products may be lower due to synergistic effects with co-additives.
Practical Notes
Formulation recommended: HEDTMP is most effective when blended with other organic phosphonates, polymers, or zinc salts to adapt to varying water qualities .
Acidic handling: The product is acidic (pH ≤ 2.0 for a 1% solution) and requires appropriate protective equipment during handling .
