Although the ponytail has long been used by people, there are not many people in the musical instrument industry who really know the ponytail structure. Some people say that there are thorns on the horse's tail. Some people think the horse tail has hair. These, of course, are not comprehensive.

Cross the ponytail and place the cross-section under the microscope to see that it is made up of three layers. Namely: scale layer, cortical layer and medullary layer.

The outer layer of the horsetail is the scale layer. Scale is composed of the outer membrane of the book, and the cells are highly keratinized. The edges of the scales are curved and curved, which is smoother. Starting from the base of the ponytail, the scales edge toward a slightly lower edge, like a tile on a Chinese style house, with a layer of overlap that overlaps each other. Of course, the size of the scales is not as uniform as the tiles.

Within the scale layer, is the cortical layer. The thickness of the cortical layer is made up of keratinized long-form cells. The cells are very tightly bound together. The tensile strength of the horsetail is determined by this layer.

In the cortical layer, there are some granular pigment cells, which are made of pigmentation and are given in color. Black horse tail is melanin many, white horsetail does not have pigment, flower horsetail is in between the two.

The central part of the ponytail is the woolly layer, which is slightly soft tissue and air. The whole medullary layer forms a strip of trace in the longitudinal section. In the medullary layer, there are also some pigment particles, but much less than in the cortex, which also plays a role in determining the color of the horsetail.

The outer layer of the horsetail has the scale layer, which lays the foundation for the friction between the bow hair and the strings. In order to balance the friction force of the push-pull bow (upper and lower bow), when the bow hairs are tied, half of the tail of a horse will be turned. In addition, the horsetail scale pieces are connected by each other, forming a concave, which is extremely beneficial for the attachment of rosin. Furthermore, the horsetail is composed of protein, and its molecular side chain and the polar base on the peptide chain have a greater adsorption force on the rosin of polar material. In this way, when the horsetail is made of the bow coat, it will be able to touch the strings and sing with ease.

Because of the special structure of the ponytail, combined with high strength and elasticity, it is not surprising that it becomes a good material for the bow hair of the instrument. So far, no material (natural and artificial) has been able to completely replace it.
