Mr. Alit started his Balinese umbrella business in 1989, when he noticed that his neighbor his village, was having good success. He apprenticed with the neighbor, and eventually adapted new designs and color motifs to the more traditional designs. Three families of Mr. Alits relatives work together on the umbrella business, living in close proximity. Alit has a 7-yr-old daughter, and his favorite hobby is gardening. His umbrellas look great in the garden. He makes single-tiered, double, triple and even quadruple- (4) tiered umbrellas in many colors and designs. Alit is grateful for the opportunity to share his family work with an international audience, and has modest goals for any success his business has: just improving his house and grounds and the neighborhood temple, so that his community can have more elaborate worship ceremonies, an integral part of Balinese daily life.
